・Jimmy Heath - Triple Threat (1962)
まずは Freddie Hubbard の目が覚めるような
トランペットにグッとくる。Dizzy Gillespie と同系統の、
アッパーでイカれたトランペットだ。
Triple Threat とは三拍子揃った強者、という意味で、
演奏家（Ts）、作曲家、アレンジャーとしての
Jimmy Heath を指しているのだろう。
昔、札幌の友人のスカ・バンドに Triple Slott（3気筒）
というグループがいたのだけれど、もしかすると
このアルバムからバンド名を借用したのだろうか。
松竹谷清さんの「君にバウンス」
（原曲：Skatalites – “You’re So Delightful”）をカバーしたり、
7inch を何枚か出していた、良いバンドだった。

and put out a few 7-inch records.
They were a really good band.

30年以上前、フリーター生活に見切りをつけて就職した。
まだバブルの残り香が漂う時代で、ほぼ未経験でも潜り込める
ソフト開発会社が当時は結構あった。公共インフラ系システムの
末端を担う会社に入り、電力会社の現場や空港の現場へ次々と
送り込まれた。
夜間、ヘルメットを被り無線機を手に、滑走路を駆けずり回るような
仕事だった。管制塔の下にある建物に作業場所があり、そこでコードを
書くこともあった。Unix C だった。同じ建物には機動隊の詰め所があり、
昼休みには構内のコンビニで屈強な機動隊員たちと並んで弁当を買った
ものだ。機動隊員は皆、自分と同世代で幼かったな。
滑走路の用地買収を巡って揉めていたため、反対派がタイヤを燃やす騒ぎが
起きると、様子を見に行くこともあった。結局、用地買収は実現せず、
僕がコードを書いた部分の滑走路計画も頓挫し、システム自体がお蔵入りに
なったようだ。反対派が乱入した当時の管制塔も、計画変更によって現在は
別の場所に移っているらしい。
いま振り返ると、なかなか得難い経験をしたと思う。
他の空港の現場では、埋め立て地の上に滑走路を作るため、地盤沈下によって
灯火の角度に誤差が生じることを前提としたシステムになっていた。
滑走路が沈む、というのは新鮮な驚きだった。先日、同業の先輩と話していて、
現在は埋め立て方式をやめ、浮き島の上に滑走路を作っているので、
沈む問題はないはずだと言っていた。
堅牢だと信じて疑わない社会インフラも、実は意外と
雑で場当たり的な造り・運用になっているのだな、とその時思った。
昨今のナショナリズムや排外主義の台頭により、国や社会に過剰に適応し、
同調することに安らぎを見出す人が増えているように思う。
政府に異を唱えると、反日だ、反社だなどとレッテルを貼られる。
あなたがたが寄りかかるその社会、国家とやらは、果たして本当に堅牢で、

Over thirty years ago, I decided to leave my life as a freeter behind
and get a proper job.
It was still an era with the faint afterglow of the bubble economy,
and back then there were quite a few software development companies
that would let you in with almost no experience.
I joined a company that handled the peripheral systems for public
infrastructure projects, and I was sent one after another to the sites
of electric power companies and airports.
At night, I would wear a helmet, carry a radio, and run around the runways
as part of my work.
There was a workspace in a building under the control tower where I
sometimes wrote program code.

lunchtime I would line up with the burly officers at the on-site convenience
store to buy a BENTO.
All the riot police officers were about my age, and back then they looked

coded for was abandoned, and the system itself was apparently shelved.

Looking back now, I realize it was a rare and valuable experience.

was designed assuming that subsidence would cause errors in the lighting angles.
The fact that runways could sink was a striking revelation for me.
Just the other day, talking with a senior in the same industry, he said that nowadays
they no longer use the reclaimed land method but instead build runways on floating
islands, so the sinking issue should no longer exist.
At that time, I thought to myself that even social infrastructure, which people take
for granted as solid and reliable, is actually surprisingly rough and improvised in both
construction and operation.
In recent years, with the rise of nationalism and exclusionary ideologies,
it seems that more people find comfort in over-adapting to and conforming
with society and the state.

某コンビニのレジ横の和菓子コーナーに売っている
アレが美味いだとか、スーパーで売っている
パウンドケーキみたいなカスカスのやつはダメだとか、
「オレはあれはあれで好きだよ」とか、
某所には桐箱に入った贈答用の
すごいカステラが売っているだとか、

Over long stretches of history, everything gets mixed together in countless ways.
Even “race,” from a genetic standpoint, doesn’t actually exist. It’s no different
from how cats come in tabby, black-and-white, calico, and all sorts of variations.
As for xenophobes who can only talk about their own identity by clinging to roots
that don’t even exist, I intend to protest them thoroughly.

気づいたら割れていた。新しいのを買わなくては。
割れたレコードは、下北沢の駅前で弾き語りをしていた若者に、
チップを添えて差し上げてきた。
もう一枚、 "Duppy Conqueror" の7インチも持ち歩いている。
それと、ずいぶん昔にクリスチャンの友人から
もらった十字架のペンダントが、やはりいつの間にか
無くなっていたので、新しいのをもらいに行かなくては。
