Kevin, Alcoholic.
Thanks so much, Dominic, for the topic of willingness and Step 10. I am one bullheaded, unwilling SOB, and I still marvel at the fact that I continue to be recovered in the program. The desperation I felt in the early days was enough to pull me in and keep me here. It was enough to get me through the steps the first time, maybe the second and third. But the longer I’ve been in the program, the more I’ve been confronted with the sheer difficulty of Step 10, which is that I do have to continue to do this, whether I feel like it or not.
And so, yes, when I think about it this way, willingness really is key. It really is the secret to this program. I’ve certainly done my share of praying for the willingness to even be willing, and that’s helped a bit. But what I’ve come to learn further into this journey is that acceptance has somehow come to serve as the foundation or basis for willingness.
I used to struggle with this because they seem like such a paradox. If I accept everything exactly as it is, doesn’t that mean I have no interest in change? I have no interest in being willing to have something different happen? Somehow, though, in practice, that’s just not how it’s worked. What seems to occur instead is that when I am truly okay with things exactly as they are, I become aware of possibility. I become capable of seeing the change that I couldn’t even fathom before.
I guess the crazy way of saying this, if anybody is even following what I’m saying, is that when I completely accept everything as it is, I’m also accepting the potential for change that exists within it. And that, for me, is God. That’s a higher power. That’s the voice leading me out of the darkness.
And as I’m saying this, though, I have to wonder: Well, then, how and why am I even working the steps? And for me, the answer is that they’re the best tool, or toolkit, that I know of to remove all the obstacles to that acceptance and connection with a higher power.
So today, I feel lucky that, in this strange mystery of my sobriety, I am totally okay with who and what I am today, and yet I appear somehow to be growing as a result of the steps, the program, and a higher power.
So thanks, everyone, for letting me share, and I hope everyone has a peaceful week.
Yours in recovery,
Kevin
