Thank you, Dominic, for your service and lead.
I read once that one of the big differences between first-born children and later born children is the difference between being internally controlled and externally controlled. Later born children tend not to be taught limits or internal control.
Generalities are not always useful, but I can vouch for one child - the fifth born in a zoo of an alcoholic family. This child had no guidance on this foreign idea of limits or internal control.
Everything was put on me. I was the victim of everyone and everything out there. I had no filters and no sense of any internal restraint.
Meeting willingness in AA was much harder than attempting a French "r" for the first time (which seemed impossible). All I could do was listen and learn and begin to practice this strange idea. It helped tremendously to hear people talk about being willing to pray for willingness. I needed all the baby steps demonstrated - teeny baby steps for me.
Fast forward - Hurray, hurray - you-all taught me how to be willing an hour at a time - Not to drink, until I could do a 1/2 day at a time, between meetings, then a whole 24 hours - Yee Ha!
Fast forward a couple decades of 24-hour increments, today is my 13th day of being caffeine free (except a couple bites of chocolate and one cup of green tea). I haven't been caffeine free since before I was 15, and that was many decades ago!
Guess what - it works, if we work it, with the help of all you lovely fellow trudgers - Thank you all - tools of HP.
Grateful for meeting willingness (and gratitude),
