"So perhaps the questions for this week are: What has willingness looked like in your recovery? What comes to mind as something you didn’t want to do but did anyway because you had a measure of willingness, and that through consistent practice eventually became something you wanted to do? And what role does Step 10 inventory play in helping you recognize drift and continue growing in sobriety? I’d love to hear your experience with willingness, discipline, or a Step 10 inventory. As always, you are also welcome to share on Tradition 10."

Greetings fellow ESHers,

I'm an alcoholic and my name is Robert. At 3 or 4 in the morning of January 29, 1988, when my wife turned off the ceiling lights in my home office where I was lying down on a couch, passed out after drinking all night, and she said, "Why don't you take your coat and your boots off, Robert, and come to bed? It's 3 (or perhaps 4) in the morning, I had a God inspired intuition that told me the reason I felt so miserable and out of place in my family was my drinking.

Following this realization, I became willing to call my sober former drinking and drugging buddy Luc and ask him if he would take me to one of his AA meetings he kept inviting me to. Of course I wasn't going to call him at 4 in the morning, I would go to bed and call him when I woke up. That was my first instance of willingness on my part to do something for what I now admitted was my drinking problem.

Effectively, I called him around 11 o'clock in the morning on January 30, 1988 and asked him to take me to an AA meeting, because I wanted to quit drinking. Luc said, "Sure, Robert. Don't drink today and I'll take you to a very good meeting tomorrow morning (they're all good, but I guess he wanted to stay sober that day so I wouldn't still be drunk the next day). Well I didn't drink and I was sober on Sunday January 31, when Luc took me to my first AA meeting. I've been sober ever since.

This simple willingness on my part to ask for Luc's help has so far flowered into more than 38 years of happy, fulfilling sobriety that allowed me to become the father and the husband I had long wanted to be.

I called Luc when I was 20 years sober to thank him for having been my first sponsor and having encouraged me to work the 12 Steps as they are explained in the Big Book. Luc passed away sober since then.

I'm grateful for this bit of willingness that brought me here, with you all.
Thank you and thank God,
Robert
