[ESH] freedom - Debbie G (2026/10/8)

I remember when I was younger and self-will was running riot, drinking and drugging was prevalent, that I ended up in jail. I got along with all the girls there. And one day, I started singing the song “Freedom,” and the other girls started joining in. Well, it made the guards pretty nervous. They started doubling up and pacing back and forth. Nothing came of it, though. And amazingly, it wasn’t a bad experience.

When I came to the program, I had no idea about freedom. I thought I was free away from my parents’ home, ripping and running on the streets, doing what I wanted. But then, like many others, alcohol and drugs started to have their way with me. And I ended up a prisoner in my own soul and body. I ended up in intensive care quite a few times before I finally made it to AA.

Not only did I find freedom, but I learned what freedom was. It took time because I was filled with fear of people, places, and things. Many meetings and working the Steps finally got rid of the fear. And I learned a new life that I had never experienced before, either growing up or out there on my own.

I became appreciative of this new life and continued to work on myself. Fear of everything has mostly disappeared. And when it pops up, I know to turn it over and trust in my Higher Power. I know that I can’t control anything except my actions.

And most of all, I have learned acceptance, to accept the things I cannot change, and the wisdom to know the difference.
