Jeff wrote, "Please share about the changes you have experienced as you have become free from the bondage of self."
I'm an alcoholic and my name is Robert. Thank you, Jeff, for chairing this week and suggesting this topic for discussion.
From the moment I started drinking at age 19 to when I quit drinking one week before turning 42, I had no idea I was a slave to my "self", I wasn't aware of this "bondage". I only became conscious of this after my first sponsor Luc told me I would find the solution to all my problems in the programme of recovery described by AA's twelve Steps in the Big Book Alcoholics Anonymous. I purchased the book and started reading it. I asked Luc to guide me through the Steps.
Well, I discovered that these steps were there to help me become aware, to awaken my spirit, to lead me to a spiritual awakening. I needed that, but I did not know it. I had become addicted to a selfish way of life where I neglected and hurt my family, those who loved me the most. The first thing I became aware of was my dependency on alcohol, my obsession with alcohol... and with my "self". At one point in my first few weeks of sobriety, I heard a speaker who had had several relapses over the years, he said, until he got on his knees and asked God to take away his obsession to drink. The obsession was lifted and he was sober 20 years when I heard him. I went back home, locked the door, went into my office, pulled down the blinds and got on my knees and asked God to rid me of that obsession. It worked. I haven't felt the urge to drink in over 38 years. So my first awareness was that I was powerless over alcohol.
Then when I started my Step 4 inventory, I became aware of my selfishness and of the harm I had caused my wife and my children. I decided I was going to change that. (With God's help) It was early June and the beginning of the fishing season. I decided to take my 8 year old son fishing, and I told God I would do things the way my son wanted. So I rented a car and we drove to a National Park where we could secure the lake of our choice and fish the whole day in a rowboat supplied by the park. As we were driving along, I told my son we would ask for a lake that has trout in it. My son interrupted me and said, "I'd prefer to fish for pike." I calmly explained that at this time of the year it was better to fish for trout. We could fish for pike in the warmer season. And anyway we did not have the metal leads needed at the end of our nylon fishing lines, and pikes would cut the lines with their very sharp teeth... "But I want to fish for pike", he said. Hmmm, I thought about my deal with God, and said, "Okay, we'll stop at a store that sells fishing equipment and buy what we need."
We did, and asked for a lake where there was pike. After spending the day out on a lake where the little bugger caught more pikes and bigger ones than I did, my son told me, "You know, Dad, we've been here the whole day and we haven't quarrelled once", he said, "you're getting better." I was moved to tears. (I still am)
This was a change resulting from my attending AA meetings since February, with four months and a few days of sobriety.
In December this year the woman I'm still married to after 57 years, our 47-year old son and myself will be flying to Sweden to be with our 44-year old musician daughter and celebrate Christmas together.
And they ask me if AA works. It does indeed.
