Hi everyone, this is Kevin, alcoholic. Thanks so much for the topic of freedom this week. I can still recall the feeling I had after my first AA meeting, when something clicked inside and I felt like it might be possible to not drink just for today. It still feels like a miracle to think about, but that got me to 90 days and six months and a year, all thanks, I think, to the momentum that those early meetings gave me.
That was a huge relief from the crushing feeling that no matter what I did or how hard I tried, I would pick up again. Today, I would say that this freedom has spread to many other areas of my life.
One thing I’m grateful for right now is that I have the freedom to take care of myself. I used to have an exponentially growing set of health problems that I could do nothing about because I didn’t have the discipline, the willpower, or the freedom to do it. But today I can. I can change the little things. I can eat differently. I can choose when I go to bed at night. I can keep up with routines and health regimens. These are all things I could never do before because that first drink would bring it all crashing down.
And I guess this has also meant that I am at least somewhat capable of being responsible for others, of having the freedom to take care of others as well as myself. I’m not as good at this as I’d like to be yet, but the fact that it is possible at all is a tremendous change from the way that things used to be.
So thank you for the topic and for reminding me to be deeply grateful for how my life is different today. I hope everyone has a wonderful week.
Kevin
