ESHExperience, Strength, and Hope -

Dear ESH'ers

Thanks for starting us off this week Kitza and to all that shared and listened.

My name is Susan and I am a recovered, not cured, alcoholic. God separated me from alcohol on 9/1/90.

I picked up the BB and reread the chapter "The Family Afterward" this afternoon. For me the paragraph that stuck out today was on page 131 and I quote, "Drinking isolates most homes from the outside world. Father may have laid aside for years all normal activities."

This was true in my family of origin. We couldn't have people over and Dad certainly didn't have any 'normal' activities.

And guess what? I was a carbon copy of that. I didn't even go outside in the end. There were no phone calls or visits...I just had to drink...it consumed my entire life.

Now being sober a few decades as I look back on all that I have been able to experience, it amazes me. My current husband of 30 years has never seen me drink, so there hasn't been much change in his expectations or my activities. I still am as involved in AA as I was when we met in 1996.

I do have to maintain my balance with home and AA though. There are times I can be on a meeting or the phone and be laughing so much with another recovered alcoholic and I must remember to bring that same joy and energy to my marriage.

Blessings,
Susan M.
