Hi everyone, Kevin here, grateful alcoholic.
Thank you so much for the topic of gratitude. What I am grateful for today is the life that I get to live in sobriety.
As I’m writing this, my parents are in the other room watching my kids, and my wife is giving our oldest a bath. I couldn’t say anything like that 15 years ago. At that time, I would have been drinking myself to sleep in front of the television.
I’ve got people around me who are close, and I’ve got good relationships with them. Ironically, I lost a lot of people in the course of becoming sober, but the relationships that I’ve had and kept, and the few additional ones that I’ve built, have been extraordinary—richer than they’ve ever been in the past.
Thinking about this also makes me realize something else I’m grateful for. Throughout my life, I’ve often had ideas about what I wanted to accomplish, and when I wasn’t in recovery, that wasn’t possible for me. But in recovery, opportunities presented themselves.
I should be careful not to say that I always get what I want, because that’s definitely not true. But what I do have today is the ability to be grateful for what I have been given, and to recognize that sometimes, when things don’t turn out my way, the outcome is far better than I ever imagined it could be.
So thanks, everyone, for reading, and I hope you all have a great week.
In fellowship,
Kevin
