私たちがソーバーだからといって、人生で何の問題も起こらなくなるわけではありません。たとえば、怒っている配偶者や友人、あるいはほかの人たちが私たちのお尻に噛みついてくるような問題です。解決できる問題もあれば、解決できない問題もあります。
病気や老い、その他、今まさに私たちに降りかかっている、あるいはこれから起こるであろう数々の困難の中には、乗り越えることがほとんど不可能に思えるものもあるでしょう。
要するに、長くソーバーでいる人の誰一人として、私に「人生はバラ色になる」と約束したことは無いのです。彼らが約束してくれたのは、現実でした。デビーのペットの犬たちは病気にかかる可能性があります。それが現実です。私自身を含めて、永遠に生きる生き物など一つも思い浮かびません。科学者なら違うことを言うかもしれませんが、私は疑っています。そして電子機器について言うならば、私たちの幸福を便利な電子機器などに頼るのはやめたほうがいいでしょう。
私自身について言えば、私は人生を、そのすべての問題も、報いも、ときどき尻を蹴飛ばされるような出来事もひっくるめて受け取ろうと思います。もちろん、ときには腹を立てることもあるでしょう。でも、その怒りは一時的なものです。私の場合は、それでうまくいっています。

Just because we're sober doesn't mean life is going to occur without our having any problems, like angry spouses or friends or other folks nipping at our backsides. Some problems can be solved; some can't.
We may find it almost impossible to overcome some Illness, aging, and a host of other troubles that will befall us presently or will take place in the future.
Thing is, not one old timer ever promised me a rose garden. They did promise reality. Debbie's dogs are susceptible to diseases. That's reality. I can't think of one living thing that lives forever, including me. Scientists might tell me differently, but I doubt it. And as for electronic gadgetry, we'd better not rely on gizmos for our happiness.
As for me, I'll take life with all its problems plus its rewards and occasional kicks in the butt. Sure, I'll get angry at times, but my anger will only be temporary. And that's the way it works for me.
