私はこれまで世界各地で何千ものミーティングに参加し、長年にわたってさまざまな
ホームグループAAの中で自分が所属し、活動の拠点となるグループ
のメンバーになってきました（ラストドリンクの後AAに参加してから、20回以上引っ越しをし、何度も軍の派遣任務を経験しました。）。私は90年代初頭からこのグループのメンバーです。
最初の頃の私は「物事はこうするべきだ」ということについて自分が持っている膨大な知識を、AAの

にも当てはめようという衝動がありました。でも当時の私にはなぜそうするのかが分からなかったのですが、そうした気持ちを抑えて、人の話を聞き、よく見て、提案に従っていました。私は「死にかけの執事」たちを目にしてきました。「ここは俺のミーティングだ。俺たちはこうやるんだ」という人たちです。以前所属していた
ホームグループAAの中で自分が所属し、活動の拠点となるグループ
の一つでは、創設メンバーがかなり信仰心の強い人で、私が分かち合いをすると、その内容を聖書の一節を使って言い換えて説明することがよくありました。また、グループの良心にはかることなく、時々ミーティングの形式を変更していました。その人が、私たちのミーティングを開催していた教会と意見が合わなくなったとき、彼はその教会を離れ、ミーティング会場も移してしまいました。グループのメンバーには、そこに残りたいなら教会と話し合ってもいいが、「俺のミーティング」は移す、と言ったのです。私から見ると、それがAAの精神に沿ったものではないことは明らかでした。
幸いなことに私は、その仲間以外に、提案や模範を示すこと、そして自分の経験を分かち合うことによって、静かに、そして仲間を支えるリーダーシップの例をたくさん見てきました。私が最初の頃に出会った

の役割を務めるとともに、ほかの仲間たちにもグループを支える機会と責任を担ってもらうため、一定期間でその役割を交代していました。ビジネス・ミーティングでは動議を提出し、グループの良心が別の決定をした場合には、そのグループの良心を支持していました。
COVIDの流行中、現在の私の

は、定期的に参加するメンバーがほんの数人にまで減っていました。私たちはグループを存続させるため、
サービスAAの奉仕活動
の役割を交代で担っていました。あるメンバーが、人数が減ってしまったことを嘆き、グループを解散してはどうかと提案しました。私はただ、どこのグループにも盛衰があり、またいつか席が埋まるようになるんじゃないかと思う、と自分の考えをシェアしました。実際、その通りになり、今ではたくさんの新しい仲間が

の役割を引き受けてくれています。その一員でいられることを、ありがたく思っています。

Hi, everyone. My name is Dave and I am an alcoholic. Thanks for a great lead and topic, Laurie, and for showing us that it works. Welcome to all and congrats to AA (and HP!) for any milestones we celebrate this week. The program works!
I’ve attended thousands of meetings around the world and been a member of many different home groups over the years (I’ve made somewhere north of 20 moves and multiple deployments since putting down my last drink and joining AA). I’ve been a member of this group since the early 90s.
Early on, I had the instinct to apply my vast knowledge of “how things oughta be done” to the program but for reasons unknown to me at the time, I kept a lid on that and listened, watched, and followed directions. I’ve seen the bleeding deacons (“This is MY meeting. This is how we do it.”) — the founding member of one of my old home groups was quite religious and frequently after I shared, he would paraphrase my message with passages from the Bible. He also changed the meeting format periodically without benefit of the group conscience. When he had a disagreement with his church (which hosted our meeting) he left the church and moved the meeting. He told the group they could talk to the church if they wanted to stay but HIS meeting was moving. It was clear to me that was not in keeping with the spirit of AA.
Fortunately, I’ve seen more examples of quiet, supportive leadership by suggestion, example, and sharing. My early sponsors held service positions and rotated out of them to give others the opportunity and responsibility to support the group. They made motions at business meetings and if the group conscience decided differently, they supported the group conscience.
During COVID, my current home group had dwindled to a handful of regulars. We rotated among service positions to keep the group going. One member lamented our diminished size and suggested disbanding. I simply shared that all groups ebb and flow and that I thought we would probably fill the seats again. That’s exactly what happened and we’ve got lots of fresh blood taking on service positions. I’m grateful to be a part of it.
