Hi ESH friends,

I'm a recovered alcoholic and my name is Robert. The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines "muddle" thus:

> 1
> *:*a state of especially mental confusion
> 2
> *:*a confused mess

We have two topics this week. But that's all right for a bunch of muddled alcoholics like us:-)

First,
Le 22.03.2026 à 00:55, Debbie G. a écrit :
> Please share your thoughts on step five or anything related to AA.

Then at 7:23 Bobbie wrote:
> Share how you muddle about your life. When times are tough.

Here goes. Feeling miserable with my *muddled *and confused life, I asked God for help and that is what brought me to the realization that I was powerless over alcohol and that my life had become unmanageable. I therefore asked an AA friend to take me to an AA meeting and I got sober, gradually changing and becoming a grown up, at 42 years of age! At 80 now, I still attend AA meetings because I still need to grow up and learn how to live a responsible, happy, joyous and free life.

Now I'll get to the topic of Step 5. In early recovery, after completing

Step 4, I didn't feel the need of confiding all this shit to another person, other than myself and God. What was the point? But I heard wiser AA members who had years of sobriety say that if I skipped Step 5, I might drink again. I felt so good since I had stopped drinking that I didn't want to take that chance. So, as suggested in the Big Book, I found a priest I trusted who had been my spiritual advisor when I was a teenager and made an appointment with him. I secretly feared that, after I'd told him everything I'd done, he would recite a formula and give me a formal absolution for my sins. But I had chosen a wise and understanding man. After I concluded my story, he simply said, You're a good man, Robert. I felt relief, but at the time I could not understand what that really meant for me.

It was only months later when an alcoholic I was sponsoring made his Step 5 with me, sharing secrets that had been burdening him for years, that I saw in his eyes and recognized the relief I myself had felt earlier when I had shared my past with Father Amiot. God bless him.

Each of the 12 Steps of AA is an experience of self-awareness.

Robert

P.S. Instead of "Keep coming back" at the end of AA meetings, a member of my home-group says, "Keep waking up!"
