ESHExperience, Strength, and Hope -

ESHExperience, Strength, and Hope -

ESHExperience, Strength, and Hope -

WELCOME TO THE ESH WEEKLY MEETING

The structure of an ESH meeting is that the chairperson selects a topic for the week and anyone in the group has the option to share on that topic or as an alternative, a member may share on the step or tradition correlating to the month of the year. For example - in November you may share on Step 11 or Tradition 11. We hope this recent change will encourage more participation.

Since ESH is an email-based group, a person who shares does not see the smile or nodding head that he/she does in other meeting formats.

Some of us provide that validation through an email response. In order to keep the postings to a minimum for the entire group, we do request that personal messages be sent directly to that person and not via the Group.

The ESH meeting will begin no earlier than Sunday morning any time after midnight EST and members are requested to post their shares no later than the following Saturday night at 11:59 PM EST. All members are encouraged to share their A.A. anniversary on their annual sobriety date. Tell the group what your life was like before AA, what happened, and what it's like today.

Also, please remember the cyber basket, as follows for your 7th Tradition Contributions:

************************************

Hi All, my name is Laurie and I am an alcoholic. Thank you, Tony, for the privilege of leading our meeting this week and welcome to all who participate (or read) this week. Congrats to anyone celebrating!

On 8/4/1995, I attended my first AA meeting. Two days earlier, I had looked in the mirror and had the strangest of realizations, that being that the alcoholic who had ruined my life was the one staring back at me.

At that time, I was 38 years old, in an abusive marriage, with two children in the midst of issues, and nursing a corporate career where my reputation and future prospects were dwindling quickly. Up until that point, I had been absolutely, positively convinced that the problem was my husband's or, failing that, was the result of my alcoholic parents. Sure I drank, every day, and had developed a growing habit of starting that drinking with an "early" lunch, but it wasn't that bad!

Deep down, I knew I was down for the count. For the first few months, I turned my Big Book to page 25 where it had these four precious words, "There is a solution." It meant a lot then and means even more now. (It does, however, quickly tell me I probably won't like it.)

I have been privileged to stay in AA since that time and 31 years later, remain active in the fellowship and follow the design for living contained in our twelve steps. For that, I will be forever grateful.

Aging in Recovery is the topic of a workshop I will be attending next weekend. I'm intrigued by this topic and have given it some thought as I approached this milestone. Recently in reading the 12 & 12 with a sponsee, in Tradition 2, we reviewed the concept of elder statesmen and bleeding deacons.

In retrospect, I certainly have gone through periods of being a bleeding deacon (and occasionally still head down that path). After all, I have experience! If only they would do as I said or thought ...

It does tell me in that section that, "Nearly every oldtimer in our Society has gone through this process in some degree." (Once again, I'm not unique.) I love, love, love their description that follows, especially "Theirs is the quiet opinion, the sure knowledge and humble example that resolve a crisis." Added to that, "They do not drive by mandate; they lead by example." I also love that this program is not "one and done". We keep growing and changing and we keep discovering new lessons.

So for those of us who've been around a while, how'd you learn to become an elder statesman? How do you balance your experience with letting others learn and grow? How'd you get there? There are some fine examples in this group, by the way!

For those who are newer, how about what you find attractive and are drawn to in the more experienced members of the fellowship you've met?

The 8th Step and/or 8th Tradition are also available as topics if you'd rather!

Thanks. It's your meeting and it's now open.

Laurie T.
