Thanks so much, Nancy, for the share and for the topic of the Eighth Step.
I’m one of those who has benefited a lot from the Eighth Step. I absolutely need to make a list—and perhaps check it twice—before embarking on any amends. I’ve made a lot of mistakes with amends in the past. Most of them have stemmed from the mistaken belief that I made amends to make myself feel better, when the fact is, I make amends to correct my behavior and learn not to do it again.
It took me a long time to get over the idea that I thought I could say just the right thing to a person to make them feel good, have all my guilt relieved, and make everything go back to the way it was. But, of course, it’s never worked out that way. As long as I used amends to manipulate, I only felt worse.
By making a list, I can ask for help. Someone can tell me who should stay on it, and someone can tell me who should come off it, because I’ve often been a really bad judge of that myself.
And I love the last part too—the idea that I have to become ready to make them. I know some people say we should make amends as soon as possible, but every amend I’ve made while I still carried resentment only ended up hurting other people and even myself. I really do have to be ready. I really have to have forgiven them in my heart. Only then can I genuinely say that I was wrong and am willing to fix it.
This step also reminds me, though, how much I love Steps Six and Seven and the possibility that I can fix these things before they end up hurting other people and before I end up having to eat humble pie.
So thanks so much for the topic, and I wish everybody a wonderful week in fellowship and gratitude.
