Good afternoon. Pam here, a grateful alcoholic. Congratulations Dorothy for 40 years, one day after the other…really adds up…and thank you for steadily sharing your ESH with us. Also, welcome people new to ESH and/or AA.
Rule 62…been awhile since this has been mentioned. “We are not a glum lot…” The face-to-face meeting I attend regularly at noon on Mondays usually has some anecdote from someone that gives a bit of levity. It’s always welcome, especially when there are new people attending for the first week, month, or longer.
Harkening back to a women’s meeting many years ago, I was sharing about a situation. Pre-sobriety date: my husband, my drinking buddy, and I were both smokers. We didn’t smoke in the house when the kids were awake. When they were sleeping, we outrageously didn’t practice the “no smoking while the kids are awake” rule. What were we thinking??? More alcoholic behavior.
My drinking had progressed to the point that occasionally I would become paralyzed, unable to move. Obeying the no-smoking rule when the kids were awake, I would smoke outside on the front porch. Sometimes, standing a little too close to the edge of a step, I would fall into the yard...and just lie there...paralyzed for a certain period of time...fully aware that I could not move...maybe 30 seconds, maybe a minute...I wasn’t sure...and when I was finally able to move again, I would return inside.
We lived near a road, and I was always afraid someone would drive by and see me. Fortunately, that never happened.
When I finished telling my story, another woman shared her own story about getting drunk and falling into berry vines. She couldn’t move and had to be helped out by someone who happened to come by and untangle her.
The similarity between our two stories gave us a really good laugh. That’s how it is with so many of our stories. At the time they were devastating, but later they can become something that brings us a happy moment.
Thank you, Dorothy, for the topic and for giving us the opportunity to laugh just by remembering.
Stay well, everyone. Peace...
