My name is Yuu, and I’m an alcoholic. Dorothy, thank you for chairing this week’s meeting. Reading your share reminded me of one of my own funny stories.

I have a question for my ESH friends:
Please raise your hand if you have ever gone to a meeting hoping to see a cute girl or a handsome guy! ...And if you’re too embarrassed to raise your hand, don’t forget to honestly admit it to your sponsor and your Higher Power later, in private. (^^

When I first came to AA, most of my mind was consumed by thoughts of alcohol, and the rest was filled with things like cute girls, rock music, and so on... ...Please don’t tell me that not much has changed! (^^

After I started going to AA meetings, I began attending a particular meeting every week because there was a woman there I secretly had a crush on. Of course, without a drink in me, I was extremely shy, so I could never bring myself to talk to her. In my mind, I secretly called her “my sobriety goddess.” There were actually a few women in the program whom I secretly thought of that way.

One day, while I was sitting at the meeting place before the meeting started, I became so nervous that my stomach began to hurt. (Sorry for the TMI!) I accidentally passed gas, and I was convinced that everyone around me had heard it — especially my “sobriety goddess.” I was so embarrassed that I left before the meeting even began. After that, I never went back to that meeting again.

Back then, I was a very insecure person with a very fragile sense of self. Today, I think I have grown as a person, so if I made the same mistake I did back then (passing gas!), I believe I could either:

1. Politely apologize, or
2. Laugh it off with a little humor.

A lot of time has passed since then. I have also done my sexual inventory, and I no longer find myself blindly developing romantic feelings toward women. Most of the women I secretly called my “goddesses” back then are no longer around, and I will probably never see them again. There is one woman, though, whom I still occasionally see at meetings. She was one of the women I secretly called my “goddess” back then. When I see her now, I think, “She has certainly gotten older, but she has aged beautifully.”

Today, she is no longer someone I have romantic feelings for, and she is no longer my “sobriety goddess” or my “angel.” She is simply a fellow traveler on this journey of recovery with me.

Thank you for letting me share.
