Hi, everyone. My name is Dave and I am an alcoholic. Thanks for your lead and topic, Robert, and congratulations on 38 years! As one of my oldtimer pals said when I reached 38, “That’s a good start.” Welcome to all and congrats to AA (and HP!) for any milestones we celebrate this week (like Robert’s!). The program works!
When a man asks me to be his sponsor, I say yes and then ask him to call me. Many of my newfound pigeons over the years never spoke to me again. But for the ones who do call, we talk about what they have done in the program and what I will be sharing with them. We’ll drink coffee. Possibly a lot of coffee. I give them readings from the Big Book. I start each step sharing session by praying for God’s presence and guidance. I share my experience, strength, and hope with them. We may read the book together, too. And we will talk about their attitude towards a Higher Power. Regardless of their beliefs, I will ask them to pray. I share that my prayers are guided by Step 11 (I pray for knowledge of God’s will for me and the power to carry it out). When they tell me of resentments, I ask them to pray for those they resent. I talk to them about service and if they don’t get into service on their own, I am apt to suggest it. I ask them to pass it on. And I always thank them for sharing this path with me. We can do what I can’t.
