Rules, law and order are helpful, even necessary, for individuals to function in society. That is true for our AA groups. We need protocol and order and tradition to more effectively carry our message of recovery. We need to remember, however, that the rules exist to help us and others and do not exist as an end unto themselves. For example it is a good rule of thumb to limit speaking in the FTF meetings to 3 to 5 minutes - most of the good we might share can usually be shared within that time and it gives more people a chance to talk - but there are situations where an individual might need to go over the limit. It is the chair person's job to decide how to determine, gracefully hopefully, when and how to intervene. I have also seen NA prospects show up for an AA meeting and get shown the door in a very unceremonious manner. Other times the chairperson welcomed them and explained that in the future the NA meetings might be more helpful for their situation if their problem did not include alcohol addiction. I think the latter, while it might stretch some one's idea of primary purpose, was more helpful and true to AA's mission. Life is not perfect so learning to deal with change and imperfection is part of our recovery. It is good that we are able to deal with all sorts of surprises and upsets wherever we are.
