AAのレガシー（遺産）を実感したのは、オハイオ州アクロンにあるドクター・ボブの家を訪れるという光栄にあずかったときでした。家に入ると、入口に仲間が立っていて「おかえりなさい」と言ってくれます。すでに底つき間近だったドクター・ボブに会いに、ビルはこの家に来たのです。その訪問が、ひとつの「アイデア」を「行動」へと変えました。ビルが酒を飲まないために電話をかけたバーも見学できます。こんなにもシンプルな行動が、人ひとりの命を救うなんて、本当に驚きです。
2000年のミネアポリスのAA国際コンベンションでは、多くの国々の仲間が国旗を掲げて参加しているのを目にして、まるでオリンピックにいるような気分になりました。あの二人の男がただ話をしたことから始まったものが、ここまで発展したのだという実感が、改めて胸に迫ってきました。
ミネアポリスのある場所に、有名な「ベッドに座る男性と、それに話しかける男性」の場面を描いた、美しいステンドグラスがあります。私はアイルランドから来た年配の紳士と話し、唯一心が揺らぐのはアイルランドのパブでギネスビールを飲みたくなることだと伝えました。すると彼は、「その誘惑に従わずにいられるだけのミーティングが、充分にありますよ」と教えてくれました。私はまだアイルランドを訪れたことがありませんが、いつかきっと行けると願っています。この何千人もの仲間たちが、「束縛からの自由」を祝って集う経験は、生涯忘れられないものでした。そして「この仲間たち」は、毎日、いたるところにいるのです――私が、それに気づきさえすれば。これは本当に大きな遺産です。

Good afternoon, my name is Pam and I am an alcoholic. I like this topic, Mark.
My experience of this legacy was palpable when I had the privilege to visit Dr. Bob’s house in Akron, Ohio. Upon entering, there is someone stationed at the door who says “Welcome Home”. Bill came to talk to Dr Bob, who seemed to be on his last leg. That visit turned this from an idea into action. One can visit the bar from where Bill made the call. So that he wouldn’t drink. Amazing that such a simple act could save a person.
At the Minneapolis AA international convention in 2000, seeing so many countries represented with their flags, it felt like I was at the Olympics. That sense of what had evolved from those two guys simply talking was again palpable.
There is a beautiful stained glass representation somewhere in Minneapolis of the famous guy-talking-to-guy-sitting-on-the-bed. I talked to an older gentleman from Ireland and told him my one temptation was wanting a Guinness from an Irish pub. He told me there were enough meetings to assist me in not following that temptation. I still have not gotten to visit Ireland, but maybe someday. All of these thousands of people gathering to celebrate the freedom from bondage is an experience I’ll never forget. And “these people” are everywhere, every day, if I only remember to look for them. That is quite a legacy.
