南アフリカ出身のピアニスト。1962年にアパルトヘイト下の自国から欧州に亡命し、デューク・エリントンに見出され表舞台に。祈りのような反復性と独特のリズム感・旋律。後にムスリムに改宗して Abdullah Ibrahim と改名。現在91歳で今年(2026年3月)の南アのジャズフェスにも出演されたようです。
--- A pianist from South Africa. In 1962, he went into exile in Europe from his home country under apartheid, where he was discovered by Duke Ellington and brought to wider attention. His music is characterized by a prayer-like sense of repetition, along with a distinctive rhythmic and melodic style. He later converted to Islam and changed his name to Abdullah Ibrahim. Now 91, he even appeared at a jazz festival in South Africa this year (March 2026). |
