チェット・ベイカー (Chet Baker) くらいメソメソ感を極めると、それはそれでひとつの
芸風になるかもしれないけれどね。
先日下北沢の楽器屋で、私にもブルースが歌えるだろうか？と、９千円の小さめのアコギを
小一時間眺めたけれど、やっぱり歌えないなと思って結局買わなかった。妻には、買っても
いいと思うけどあなたは絶対練習なんかしないでしょうと言われた。自分でもそうだと思う。
GEZANは初期の名曲 "D.N.A" で心臓を鷲掴みにされた。毎回泣いちゃう良い曲なんだけど、
若さゆえの無鉄砲さと偶発性が生み出した奇跡という感じ。
あの頃と比べて新作は立ってる土台が違うんだよね。存在が太いし包括的。
音楽が湧き出てくる泉のような豊かさ。妻はアルバム前作で既にそれ感じたわと言っている。
GEZAN ft. Arsenal Mikebe が出演する、FESTIVAL FRUEZINHO 2026 のチケットを買った。
マーク・リボウ(Marc Ribot)も観たいし、我らがてちゃん(西内徹) with 井上園子も出るぞ！

Masato Tomobe’s new live album was recorded at Star Pine’s Café in Kichijoji in June
2024, January 2025, and October 2025. I was probably at some of those shows. I
really like “Megane o Fuku.” (Wipe my glasses) And the line “You can’t sing the blues
when you’re not feeling well” really resonates with me. Blues without that kind of
vitality… maybe it’s better not to perform them in public, but to dig a hole and mutter
them into the ground instead. Of course, if you take that fragile, weepy feeling as far
as Chet Baker did, it might become a style of its own.
The other day at a music shop in Shimokitazawa, I found myself wondering if I could
sing the blues too. I spent about an hour looking at a small acoustic guitar for around
9,000 yen, but in the end I decided I probably couldn’t—and didn’t buy it. My wife said,
“Sure, you can buy it, but you’ll never practice.” I think she’s right.
GEZAN grabbed my heart with their early classic “D.N.A.” It’s such a powerful song
that it makes me tear up every time. It feels like a miracle born out of youthful
recklessness and spontaneity. Compared to those days, their new work stands on a
completely different foundation. Their presence feels stronger and more expansive—
there’s a richness, like a spring that keeps producing music. My wife says she already
felt that in their previous album.
I bought a ticket for FESTIVAL FRUEZINHO 2026, where GEZAN ft. Arsenal Mikebe
will be performing. I also want to see Marc Ribot, and our own Techan (Tetsu Nishiuchi)
will be there with Sonoko Inoue, too!

超有名なMilestones (Miles Davis) で恥ずかしかった。
怖い店主がいるようなジャズ喫茶だったら、こんな簡単なのもわからないのか、
顔を洗って出直して来な、坊やって言われただろうか。
家に帰ってから Milestones を聴き直していたら、妻が Straight, No Chaser のテーマに
聴き覚えがあると言い、どうやら吾妻光良&スウィンギン・バッパーズの "Photo爺ぃ" は
有名なこの曲を引用しているらしいと発見したのだけど、違いますかね？
Straight, No Chaser は マイルスの演奏が有名で、作曲はセロニアス・モンク。
モンクの演奏はブルーノートからのアルバム "Genious of ..." の Vol.2 に収録されている。
盤を持っていないのでレコード屋に探しに行きたいなぁ。あと、Milestones のオリジナル盤は
無理としても、再発MONO盤が欲しいなぁ。DUGで聴いた時のゴリっとした音が、家の
ステレオセットと僕が持っている再発STEREO盤では再現出来ないのですよ。
村上春樹先生のように、ジャズのオリジナル盤を収集する人は、モノラルで聴きたいというのが
動機のひとつなのかもしれないですね。
四月なのでプリンスの Sometimes It Snows in April を聴く。
今年は四月の雪は降らなそうだなぁ。

The other day at DUG, I asked what album was playing, and it turned out to be the
very famous Milestones by Miles Davis—which was a bit embarrassing.
If it had been one of those old-school jazz cafés with a scary owner, I might have
been told, “You don’t even know something this basic? Go wash your face and
come back, kid.”
When I got home and listened to Milestones again, my wife said she recognized
the theme of “Straight, No Chaser,” and we wondered if “Photo Jjiii” by
Mitsuyoshi Azuma & the Swinging Boppers might actually be quoting this well-known
tune—though I’m not entirely sure.
Miles’s version is famous, but the tune was written by Thelonious Monk.
Monk’s recording can be found on the Blue Note album Genius of Modern Music,
Vol. 2. I’d love to go looking for it at a record shop.
While an original pressing of Milestones is probably out of reach,
I’d really like a mono reissue. That gritty, punchy sound I heard at DUG just doesn’t
come through on my home stereo system or on the stereo reissue I own.
Collectors like Haruki Murakami, who collect original jazz pressings,
may be partly motivated by the desire to hear them in mono.
Since it’s April, I’ve been listening to “Sometimes It Snows in April” by Prince and The Revolution.
It doesn’t look like we’ll get any April snow this year.

（松永希vo、ロケット・マツpf、今井忍g、アンドウケンジロウcl）
松永希でしか補えない何かを補いました。
原マスミさんが希さんに贈った曲「声」の、"声を聴きたいな..." という歌詞を聴いて
実家の母に電話しなくちゃと思い出しました。（翌朝電話しました）
ギターの今井忍さんが一曲ボーカルを取った「夜のつばさ」の歌詞がすごくいいなと
思いました。4/26(日)にラカーニャで忍さんの「アーリータイムス・ストリング・バンド」の
ライブがあります。結成52年！ってすごいですよね。

At La Caña in Shimokitazawa (Tokyo), I saw the Nozomi Matsunaga Band
(Nozomi Matsunaga (vo), Rocket Matsu (pf), Shinobu Imai (g), Kenjiro Ando(cl,sax).
They filled something that only Nozomi Matsunaga can fill.
Hearing the line “I want to hear your voice…” from the song “Koe,”
which Masumi Hara wrote for Nozomi, reminded me that I should call my mother
back home. (I did the next morning.)
I was really struck by the lyrics of “Yoru no Tsubasa,” sung by guitarist Shinobu Imai.
There’s going to be a live show by Imai’s band, “Early Times String Band,” at La Caña
on Sunday, April 26. They’ve been together for 52 years—that’s pretty amazing, isn’t it?

アポロ15号の宇宙飛行士・ジョン・アーウィンが月面の「静かの海」で
ジェネシス・ロックに出会った時の話しを知っていますか？
ああいう感じで、一週間後にちゃんと戻って来ましたよ。
ややこし猫のボブちんと数段先をいく打ち解け方をする妻にジェラシーを感じますが、
愚直なタロさんと私の間にも「どんくさいおっさん同士」みたいななんとも言えない
素朴なつながりがあるのですよ、相手はまだ３歳の若猫ですけどね笑。
タロさんの左右の耳の色が違うところとか最高なんですよね。
右がピンクで左が黒。

Well, kind of like that… it came back to me a week later.
I sometimes feel a little jealous of how my wife connects so effortlessly
with Bob-chin, our temperamental cat who always seems one step ahead.
But between guileless Taro and me, there’s this indescribable, simple bond —
like two slightly clumsy old guys just getting along.
Well, he’s actually only a three-year-old young cat, though (^^
And the best part? His ears are different colors —
the right one is pink, and the left one is black.
