Thanks Dominic for getting us started this week.
As I think about my willingness to work this program, I relate to the last paragraph of the first step in the twelve and twelve. I was dying. I had been to so many hospitals because of my alcoholism, that I had lost all hope. The last time I had montezuma's revenge and was vomiting. All the time. I was as helpless and hopeless as the dying could be.
A friend of mine came to take me to the emergency room, and his jaw dropped open because of how I looked. My skin was sagging. My color was gray, and I had bloated up to almost two hundred pounds. I clutched my bottle of peppermint schnopps and off we went to the emergency room.
I didn't want to die. So maybe that's willingness, but I had no clue, after so many attempts how to stop.
I was hospitalized for at least a week in intensive care. Where I had pneumonia and was hooked up to quite a few machines. Finally, I was put into our regular hospital room where amazingly, just like the big book says, a young man named little. John came to my bedside and told me about the program in that hospital. He shared his story with me.
I told him I would come to the after care program. But I had little hope or desire. I just wanted to get better.
So home I went and of course, didn't follow through, but they called me. Being a people pleaser, I started going to aftercare.
I was exhausted and tired so in the beginning. I just sat there and listened.
What really helped me to start? The program was the education about how alcoholism affects the body. I was told that I could not control this disease which made me feel much better about myself.
So I started paying more attention and started to participate. And finally became willing and not only willing but excited to work the steps and be a part of this program. And that's how it all began for me.
