ESHExperience, Strength, and Hope -

ESHExperience, Strength, and Hope -

ESHExperience, Strength, and Hope -

ESHExperience, Strength, and Hope -

WELCOME TO THE ESH WEEKLY MEETING

The structure of an ESH meeting is that the chairperson selects a topic for the week and anyone in the group has the option to share on that topic or as an alternative, a member may share on the step or tradition correlating to the month of the year. For example, in November you may share on Step 11 or Tradition 11.

Since ESH is an email-based group, a person who shares does not see the smile or nodding head that he/she does in other meeting formats.

Some of us provide that validation through an email response. In order to keep the postings to a minimum for the entire group, we do request that personal messages be sent directly to that person and not via the Group.

The ESH meeting will begin no earlier than Sunday morning any time after midnight EST and members are requested to post their shares no later than the following Saturday night at 11:59 PM EST. All members are encouraged to share their A.A. anniversary on their annual sobriety date. Tell the group what your life was like before AA, what happened, and what it's like today.

Also, please remember the cyber basket. 7th Tradition contributions can be made as follows:

Hello, fellow ESH members. My name is Yuu, and I'm an alcoholic.

Thank you for asking me to chair this week's meeting. And thank you, Tony, for supporting me in taking on this service commitment.

I apologize that I haven't been able to do as much service for the group as I would like. Since English isn't my first language, I need extra time to translate my shares and other messages.

I'm grateful to be here with all of you again this week, sober, of course.

Recently, I attended a three-day, two-night AA event in Kanazawa, Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan. In Japan, we call it a “Roundup.” It's an event where AA members come together for fellowship, with meetings, speaker sessions, a sober countdown, recreational activities such as hiking, and much more. Around 150 AA members attended this year's event.

In 2024, an earthquake struck the Noto Peninsula in Ishikawa Prefecture. I've been concerned about the people affected by the disaster, so while I was in Ishikawa for the Roundup, I decided to make a side trip to Nanao City on the Noto Peninsula.

The area around the train station looked as though a lot of progress had been made in the recovery effort. However, when I spoke with a local shopkeeper, they told me that although the areas around the station, where tourists can easily get around on foot, had largely recovered, conditions were still very difficult in the mountainous and coastal areas.

I attended an AA meeting in Nanao. It was a small meeting, and I met a longtime AA member there for the first time. He usually opened the meeting room by himself. I told the members that although I wasn't sure what I could do to help those affected by the earthquake, I wanted them to know that I was thinking of them and cared about what they were going through.

At the meeting in Nanao, I met a newcomer who had been coming to AA for just ten days. He told me he planned to attend the Roundup the next day, so we said goodbye and agreed to meet there. We were able to meet again the following day.

His area hadn't suffered particularly severe damage from the earthquake, but someone in his neighborhood had been killed when a stone lantern fell on them. At the Roundup, he and I spent about an hour sharing our experiences with alcohol and other aspects of our lives. By the end of our conversation, I had agreed to become his sponsor. I continue to support him through Zoom and text messages.

As we were reading the Big Book together, I gained a new insight into the following passage from the AA Preamble:

> Alcoholics Anonymous is a fellowship of people who share their
> experience, strength and hope with each other that they may solve
> their common problem and "help others" to recover from alcoholism.
> ...
> Our primary purpose is to stay sober and "help other alcoholics"
> to achieve sobriety.

I came to AA to solve my problem with alcoholism, but once again, I realized that the solution lies in helping others with their problems. By helping others, I also find a solution to my own problem. This idea is reflected in the AA Preamble, which we read at every meeting.

When I think about the Steps, carrying the message to other alcoholics through Step Twelve is a major part of this work. But helping others in other ways, through service and other acts of support, also contributes to my own recovery. Looking back on my journey in AA, I can honestly say that this has been true for me.

Even someone who has been coming to AA for just ten days, or someone attending their very first meeting, can do many small things to help others, such as reaching out to a newcomer or simply offering them a smile. I encouraged my sponsee in Noto to do the same, and it seems that he's started making an effort to help others in these small ways.

For this week's topic, I'd like to suggest: “How do you help others?”

Since it's October, you're also welcome to share on Step Ten or Tradition Ten.

With that, let's begin the meeting.
