ESHExperience, Strength, and Hope -

Good afternoon…Pam, a grateful alcoholic. Congratulations birthday people and welcome to ESH newcomers.
Thank you, Kitza, for leading us this week by offering the topic of whatever speaks to us from Chapter 9. Having not read Chapter 9 for a long time, the Big Book on the table to the left of this chair is handily available.
Children…that part of Chapter 9 speaks to me, hits home. I drank and smoked with each pregnancy and continued until the kids were 10, 8, and 4, so there was no pre-sober, non-drinking mother for them. Nothing to compare. Fast forward…
When I returned home from three weeks at Duffy’s, life took an abrupt change. I actually never went back to the place we had lived out in the country for 10 years. I stayed a few days with Tex and then moved into a motel for a month until we moved into the house I have lived in since fall of 1982.
We seemed like the happy family with the two kids, 8 and 10, going to school in town and the 4-year-old in nursery school right down the street, husband managing his advertising business, and I going back to work as bookkeeper.
I kept “close watch” with sponsor Tex and found a home group, Myrtletowne Survivors. Life went along smoothly until about mid-October, when I noticed I wasn’t happy about leaving work and going home. Where that feeling was coming from baffled me until an awakening…HP/God moment…the thing that held us together was drinking. From the very first day we met in 1969, whenever we were together we drank to some degree that eventually became harmful.
After honest soul-searching and thinking, hoping God/HP would want for me a somewhat less troublesome life, I told my husband I couldn’t stay married. Our divorce was mostly amicable. I had given no forethought to what it would be like to be a single mom.
The slogan “First things first” at the end of Chapter 9 seems applicable. The kids and I managed with help from Tex, my family, my parents, and my older brother, who also lived in the same town.
A year after the divorce, my younger rancher brother offered to have my son Ford live with his family. Ford was happy with that. The girls were not unhappy to see their brother leave. Ford returned two years later, and our lives progressed as a family of four.
Step 9 has been a steady observance, my lifelong amends to my children from the time they were so young, through their teen years, and into adulthood. To be emotionally, mentally, and physically present, if it’s suitable, when they want to talk about anything.
To love and be loved—a daily blessing.
Thank you, Kitza…Peace…
