[ESH] Week of 8/9: Aging in Recovery - Kevin (2026/8/12)

Thanks so much for the topic this week. I remember being offended the first time I heard the words “bleeding deacon” and “elder statesman.” Of course, that had nothing to do with the words themselves. It was just that I was becoming a bleeding deacon myself and didn’t want to admit it.

In many ways, I’m thankful for this process of maturing in recovery. Once I realized I was a bleeding deacon, I could see how I was trying to control everything and everyone around me, and that my recovery had been taken over by my alcoholic tendencies.

I’ve shaken my head at many an AA home group, often saying to myself, “It’s not supposed to be this way. This isn’t how it used to be.” And I wasn’t just doing this with AA. I was doing this with everything in my life. I thought no one was as wise as me, had as much experience as me, or had been through what I’d been through, and that if they didn’t do it according to my plan, it was all going to fall apart.

But like I said, this has all been a blessing because it paved the way for accepting AA exactly as it is, and not just AA, but the other people in my life as well. It’s been a great lesson in humility to learn that my opinion matters basically zero. If people want to hear what I have to say, they will come to me and ask. And if they don’t, they’re definitely not going to listen to or heed my advice if I give it.

I hesitate to say that I’m an elder statesman, but I do get to live a life today where I just focus on what’s right in front of me, what’s in my control, and only worry about the opportunities I have to be of service to others in my life today.

I hope everyone has a peaceful week in fellowship,

Kevin
