私が10歳の小さな女の子だった頃、祖父がもらった小さなピンバッヂ (※1) を見せてくれました。それはラクダの形をしていて、ダイヤモンドが付いていました！ 少なくとも当時の私は、そのダイヤにすっかり心を奪われました。
そのとき祖父は、もしあなたが将来アルコールの問題を抱えることになったら、Alcoholics Anonymous に解決策があると話してくれました。祖父はモンタナ州の小さな町で、かつて「町一番の酔っぱらい」と呼ばれていた人で、たしか25年のソーバーを記念してそのピンを受け取ったのだと思います。
それから28年後、私は Al-Anon Family Groups のミーティングで、自分の問題はすべて両親や当時の夫のせいだと皆に納得させようとしていました。その
プログラム12ステッププログラム、回復のため原理、AAの基本プログラム。
の古参メンバーの一人が私を見て、「じゃあ配偶者のあなたは、お酒を飲まなかったの？」と尋ねました。私が「そうですよ」と答えたとき、彼が信じていないことがその目を見て分かりました。そして驚いたことに、私自身も自分の言葉を信じていないことに気づいたのです。
今日の私は、その二つの後押しと、そして私をAAに連れてきてくれた「絶望という贈り物」に、心から感謝しています。

AAメンバーである祖父が25年ソーバー記念でもらったラクダ型のピンバッジ を見せてくれた、というエピソードです。ラクダ（camel）はAAでよく使われる象徴で、「ラクダが針の穴を通るよりも、酒を飲まないことのほうが簡単だ」というユーモラスな言い回しや、「今日一日だけ飲まない」ことをラクダの “こぶ” に例える文化などがあります。

I'm Laurie and I am an alcoholic. Thanks, Yuu, for your service to the group and a great topic!
When I was a young girl, around 10, my grandfather showed me a little pin he had received. It was in the shape of a camel and had a diamond in it! I was very impressed, at least with the diamond!!!
He told me in that conversation that if I ever had a problem with alcohol, there was a solution at Alcoholics Anonymous. He was the former town drunk of a small town in Montana and received the pin to mark 25 years sober, if I remember correctly.
28 years later, I was busy trying to convince everyone in my Al-Anon meeting that my problems were all the fault of my parents or my then husband. A long-timer in that program looked at me and asked, "So you were the non-drinking spouse?" I could see in his eyes that he didn't believe me when I said yes. Amazingly, I realized I didn't believe me, either.
Today, I am so very grateful for both of those nudges, along with the gift of desperation that brought me to you!!
