最近、世界がとても小さく感じることがあります。今の私にとって、市民としての唯一のフルタイムの役割は“娘”でいることなんです。“娘”という役割の中で、私は何度もそれを拒み、同時に拒まれてもきました。それでも今、無力感を抱えながらも、手助けしようとここにいるんです。
患者である母の娘として、市民の立場で医療の現場と向き合いながら、看護師や医師と上手にコミュニケーションを取ろうとしています。怒らないようにしてるんだけど、時々まるで違う言葉を話してるみたいに感じて、イライラして、結局感情的になっちゃうんです。
今はまだ、“社会復帰できた”と胸を張って言えるような成功体験はありません。でも、少なくとも私はちゃんと向き合っています。どこかに隠れていたり、お酒に逃げたりしているわけではありません。つい最近、かつて親しかった友人に連絡を取りました。彼女の夫――彼もかつては私の大切な友人でした――が亡くなったからです。こういう時には、過去のいざこざよりも大切なことがあると思ったからです。
AA（アルコホーリクス・アノニマス）の仲間や家族、友人たちの支えを感じています。そして時々、もしかしたら彼らのほうも今、誰かの支えが必要かもしれないって思い出すんです。今日は、そんな気持ちで一日を過ごしています。他の人たちのこのテーマについての話を聞くのも楽しんでいます。

Thank you, Pam C., for chairing and for this topic. My name is Pam S. and I am an alcoholic.
My world feels small sometimes right now. My full time role as a citizen is “daughter”. I rejected and have been rejected in this role over the years, but I’m here trying to help even as I feel helpless.
As a citizen navigating the medical world for my mother as “patient’s daughter”, I’m trying to effectively communicate with nurses and doctors. Without getting testy. I sometimes feel like I must be speaking a different language and I get frustrated and definitely testy.
I don’t have success stories to tell right now of rejoining the world. Except that I’m in it. I’m not off hiding and/or drinking somewhere. I very recently reached out to someone who was once a close friend who just lost her husband, who was also once a close friend. Because differences need to be put aside at times like this.
I feel the support of my AA friends and other family and friends and remember, sometimes, that they might need support right now too. That is where I am in the world just for today. I am enjoying other people’s shares on this topic.
